Acomplia (Rimonabant) is the latest drug manufactured by Sanofi-Aventis, a French pharmaceutical firm. It was approved for sale in the United Kingdom and European Union market last June. It is prescribed by doctors as a weight-loss pill and a cure for obesity. Acomplia works by suppressing the appetite in patients, thereby lowering calorie intake and inducing weight-loss. Together with appetite suppression, it also produces a smoking cessation effect. Acomplia works by interfering with certain receptors in the brain in order to produce these effects in body. As of now, it has not yet received FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval for sale in the United States.
Since it was newly introduced, the success of Acomplia still remains to be seen. But the real problem it faces is its limited availability. At present, there are only a few pharmacies who supply the drugs since the FDA still has not yet approved its use as a weight-loss pill. Until the moment the FDA issues an approval for Acomplia, pharmacies all around the US would have a difficult time marketing it to customers and assuring them of its effectivity.
